READ TO ME SELECTION

Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock
by Eric A. Kimmel, illustrated by Janet Stevens
ISBN: 978-0823407989

Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock When Anansi discovers a magical rock that puts animals to sleep, he decides to use the stone's magic to trick the other animals out of their food supplies. Each animal - the hippo, the lion, the zebra, and more - are taken one at a time to the magic rock. Each is tricked into saying the magic words, and each animal sleeps while Anansi the trickster takes their food. But the shy little Bush Deer is watching, and she comes up with a plan to trick the trickster. Anansi is a well-known West African and Caribbean folk character, who sometimes appears as a man, sometimes as a spider. Janet Stevens' illustrations have depicted Anansi as a spider, which fits right in with this animal story. The repetition of the magic words and the sound effects as the animals fall into their magical sleep make this story a delight to read aloud.

A message from the author [December 06, 2007]:

What an honor! It's huge. I'm delighted, especially when I consider all the outstanding books that fill our libraries. I wish I could take all the credit, but a lot of the success of the book is due to Janet Stevens' illustrations. By the way, we're currently finishing up the next Anansi story. It's called Anansi's Party Time. It should be out in a year or two.

I learned to love reading because of libraries. I just about lived in our local branch from the time I started school. I remember how proud I felt when I learned how to write my name. That meant I could qualify for my OWN library card. Libraries have been important to me throughout my life. I hope my books will help do the same for future generations.

Thank you again for the best holiday present ever! Give my best to all my friends in New Jersey.

Sincerely,
Eric A. Kimmel
