Patrons
of the Ridgefield Park Public Library were asked to imagine living
in the world of Fahrenheit 451 and to decide what one book they
would save if they could. They were then asked to illustrate the
book on a quilt square, using fabric, crayons, markers, etc. RPPL
organizers originally hoped to have enough squares to make ONE
quilt, but participation was so great, they had enough squares
to make THREE quilts, all of which will proudly hang in the library.
The books being saved range from the Bible to a fourth grade science
textbook!  Margaret Mellett of BCCLS, and Laurie Leon and Anais Scott of the Dixon Homestead Library in Dumont, staged a "Pages & Pizza Book Discussion Group" on March 18. The group read and discussed "Among the Hidden" by Margaret Peterson Haddix.  The tireless Margaret Mellett conducts yet another 'Among the Hidden' book discussion - this one at the Fairview Public Library - in celebration of One Book New Jersey. FPL Director Arlene Sahraie worked with Margaret to facilitate this March 21 event.  Students at Holy Family School in Florham Park read "Regarding the Fountain" as part of the school's participation in OBNJ. About 30 HFS students in grades K-8 read all three of the young reader's selections. Thanks, guys! Thanks also to Dana Dunlevy who helped make it happen!  On Monday, March 3 (Dr. Seuss' birthday!) at the Fanwood Memorial Library had a Tacky Extravaganza. Several local children enjoyed a "Tacky the Penguin" Story Time; a craft session in which they built an "environment" for Tacky; a "Make & Dress Tacky" craft session; and some tasty penguin desserts. (Reliable sources indicate no penguins were harmed in this activity.) Fanwood Director, and penguin impersonator, Dan ("May I take your order, please?") Weiss is shown with the children and an unidentified penguin who happened to be in Fanwood at the time. Please Note: Dan is available for parties, weddings and bar mitzvahs at reasonable rates.
Teens from Oradell meet to discuss the OBNJ Young Adult selection, Among the Hidden. The Oradell Public Library hosted the event for teens on March 4. The book discussion was led by Margaret Mellett, Young Adult Services Coordinator for the Bergen County Cooperative Library System and by Debby Kyritz, Young Adult Librarian of the Oradell Public Library.   Members of the Hasbrouck Heights Free Public Library Teen Reading Group gather following their February 19 discussion of the OBNJ Young Adult selection, Among the Hidden. The discussion was led by Margaret Mellett, Young Adult Services Coordinator for BCCLS (Bergen County Cooperative Library System) and by Mimi Hui, Assistant Director of the Hasbrouck Heights Free Public Library.  Eileen Slough, Children's Librarian from the Brick Branch of the Ocean County Library, stands stage right at a "Tacky the Penguin" puppet show hosted by the Ocean County Library. Unseen puppeteers backstage are Robin Shader, Children's Librarian at the Point Pleasant Beach Branch and Dan Trivett, Children's Librarian at the Manchester Branch. These three have been unofficially dubbed "The Tacky Players!" and performed to an appreciative crowd of 36 Tacky fans on January 22 in Manchester.  Following the January 21 Press Conference announcing One Book New Jersey to the public, the First Lady of New Jersey, Mrs. Dina Matos McGreevey met with and read to several young patrons of the Plainsboro Public Library. Here, Mrs. McGreevey and Plainsboro PL Director Jinny Baeckler consult on issues of importance with four of those patrons.  |
